LAKE ARGYLE

30,000 Freshwater Crocodiles

Lake Argyle is Western Australia's largest and Australia's second largest freshwater man-made reservoir by volume. The reservoir is part of the Ord River irrigation scheme and is located near the east Kimberley town of Kununurra. The lake is approximately 22 times the size of Sydney harbour, its home to over 30,000 freshwater crocodiles with an area of over 1000 square kilometres and a shoreline stretching over 900 kilometres.

Lake Argyle was high on the top of our bucket list due to the spectacular infinity pool with breathtaking views and it definitely did not disappoint. Although the water was freezing cold, we could not get enough of that scenery and everything around us.We stayed 3 nights at the Lake Argyle caravan park which is situated 35 kms off the Victoria Highway with over 100 shady powered van sites and lots of room for unpowered camping. The caravan park is set in a peaceful location surrounded by breathtaking scenery. There is a restaurant, bar and a general store that stocks your basics such as bread, milk and souvenirs. There is no reception out at Lake Argyle but the caravan park does offer free WIFI between 4 and 6pm every evening.

When we arrived, we booked ourselves on to the popular Lake Argyle sunset cruise, which was a fantastic cruise with a good mix of history, wildlife and knowledge of the lake. It finished off with pre-dinner snacks and drinks (Beer, Wine and soft drinks) which was provided with a swim in the lake as the sun sets.

If you don't pre book a powered site make sure you arrive early as the caravans start lining up pretty early and spots do fill up fast. We arrived later in the day so our first night we were on a non-powered site as everything else was taken but was first in on a powered site early the next morning.
