GREAT BARRIER REEF TOURS

Ocean Spirit — Michaelmas Cay

Cairns

After a 2hr motorised sail on board the 32-meter sailing Catamaran, Ocean Spirit, you will arrive at Michaelmas Cay. This is a low-lying vegetated sand cay encircled by a spectacular fringing reef. Michaelmas Cay is a National Park and a protected sanctuary for migratory seabirds so only a small area of the cay is accessible to relax on.

There is so much to do once you arrive to the cay. You can go on a semi-sub tour for a diver’s view of the reef, try your own introductory scuba dive or just snorkel at your own leisure. This is a beach shuttle that takes you from Ocean Spirit to the cay constantly throughout the day.

For us we chose to do the semi-sub first. It is a short trip which takes you to the other fringing reef where you are not allowed to snorkel. Once we got back on the Ocean Spirit it was time for lunch. This worked well for us as we were one of the first ones to eat lunch. Once lunch was finished, we jumped on the shuttle and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing and snorkelling from the cay.

The coral was wonderful and again the marine life was abundant. We saw Turtles, Reef Sharks and plenty of colourful fish. This for us was an extremely enjoyable tour as it had something for all ages. It had beach time for the younger kids and plenty of snorkel time for the older kids. The staff on board were excellent and went out of their way to make the 2hr boat ride enjoyable to the kids. They gave talks about the reef, provided colouring in paper and pencils and even had the kids up and dancing. It made the 2hrs go very quickly.

We would definitely do this tour again.
